The ibex in known both as a "flag species" - with the intrinsic ability to capture the attention of the pubblic - and as an "umbrella species" with high ecological needs and living on rather large individual territories. Several initiatives for the safeguard of the ibex have been activated, such as an efficient monitoring activity and a constant communication to the public. Such actions hane contributed to the dramatic reduction of the excessive anthropic impact on Alpine enviroments, thus allowing a more sustainable development of the ecosystem. The result has been an increase in the number of ungulates as well as of other species that coexist with the ibex, such as marmots and eagles.
Parks play a key role not only in safeguarding endangered species, but also in preserving the enviroments where they live and, as a consequence, in protecting other species that share the same territory. |
